A free, open-source Social Pinpoint alternative

Social Pinpoint (now Social Point, under the Open Point umbrella) is a full engagement hub. If what you actually need is the map — residents marking places, drawing routes, outlining areas, and your team exporting GIS-ready data — Mapsurvey does that job with different economics: free, open source (AGPLv3), and self-hostable, with no quote-gated pricing.

Free Open source (AGPLv3) Lines & polygons, not just pins GeoJSON export

Why teams look for an alternative

The map is the point — so it should be a full map

Draw, don't just drop pins

The current-generation Social Map limits respondents to point markers. In Mapsurvey, people also draw routes and outline areas — essential for mobility, greenways, and land-use input.

GeoJSON out of the box

Open Point's current platform exports XLSX/CSV/PDF; there's no GeoJSON export. Mapsurvey exports GeoJSON + CSV that opens directly in QGIS or ArcGIS.

Public pricing: zero

No quotes, no tiers gating the geo tools. Reported enterprise budgets for engagement hubs run $15–40K/yr — Mapsurvey is free hosted or self-hosted.

75 languages, included

Multilingual engagement is a paid add-on there (up to 15 languages). Mapsurvey ships survey-content translation for 75 languages, free.

Being fair

When Social Pinpoint may be the better fit

  • You need a full engagement hub — forums, Q&A, idea walls, newsletters — not just map surveys.
  • Voting and reactions on other residents' pins matter to your process (they offer five modes; we don't have this yet).
  • You want their Fund It participatory-budgeting allocation module or bundled AI text analysis.
  • Formal accessibility procurement: their new surveys target WCAG 2.2 / Section 508 compliance.

We keep this honest on purpose. If you need the full hub, buy the hub — if you need the map, try the map.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Mapsurvey an open-source alternative to Social Pinpoint?
Yes — it is an open-source, self-hostable alternative for map-based engagement, with no per-project licence on the open-source path.
Can respondents draw, not just drop markers?
Yes — respondents can drop points and also draw lines (routes) and polygons (areas), then you export the geometry.
Can I export the raw spatial data?
Every response — including map geometry — exports as GeoJSON plus a CSV for non-spatial answers, so results drop straight into QGIS, ArcGIS, or a spreadsheet. You own the data.
Can I self-host it?
Yes. Mapsurvey ships as a Docker stack you can run on your own infrastructure, so response data stays on servers you control — useful for GDPR and data-residency requirements.
