Public Consultation Software

Mapsurvey is open-source public consultation software built around the map. Run statutory consultations, planning applications, and infrastructure schemes where stakeholders comment exactly on the location in question — then export GIS-ready evidence for your report. Free to start, self-hostable, and GDPR-friendly.

Why teams choose it

Consultation that produces evidence, not just comments

Comments on the map

Stakeholders respond where the proposal is — a route, a site boundary, a junction — so responses are precise and easy to act on.

Report-ready output

Export every response as GeoJSON + CSV for your consultation report, GIS analysis, or committee evidence pack.

Defensible & transparent

Open source (AGPLv3) and self-hostable — auditable process, data under your control, GDPR-friendly by design.

Fits any budget

No per-project or per-response licensing. Run one consultation or a whole programme on the same free platform.

How a consultation runs

From proposal to evidence in four steps

  1. Build the consultation — questions plus a map where people pin, draw, or outline.
  2. Share the link — no app or account needed for respondents.
  3. Collect location-specific responses from residents and stakeholders.
  4. Export GIS-ready data for your consultation report and analysis.
Used by councils, consultancies, developers, and infrastructure teams. If you need a specific fit, we keep dedicated pages for local government and the broader engagement platform. See the community engagement platform →
{# Visible FAQ section for SEO landing pages. Renders nothing when no FAQ is supplied. Questions/answers come from the seo_landings registry (context var `faq_items`), the same source as the FAQPage JSON-LD, so they can't drift. #}

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this free public-consultation software?
Yes. Mapsurvey is open source (AGPLv3) and free to start — you can create and publish a map-based survey without paying, and self-host the whole platform at no licence cost.
Can residents comment on specific locations?
Respondents can drop points, draw lines (routes), and outline polygons (areas) directly on the map, alongside ordinary survey questions.
Do respondents need to sign up to give feedback?
No. Respondents open a public link and answer on the map — no sign-up or login required. Only survey creators need an account.
Can we export consultation responses for the record?
Every response — including map geometry — exports as GeoJSON plus a CSV for non-spatial answers, so results drop straight into QGIS, ArcGIS, or a spreadsheet. You own the data.
Can it be self-hosted for public-sector data rules?
Yes. Mapsurvey ships as a Docker stack you can run on your own infrastructure, so response data stays on servers you control — useful for GDPR and data-residency requirements.
